The Criminal Court has remanded two suspects arrested in relation to the rape reported in Male' City on Friday evening, by five days.

The two men, aged 18 and 23, were arrested from the scene of the crime in Male' City on Friday night.

The Criminal Court had remanded them by five days as there had been enough evidence collected to link them to the rape of a woman in Maafannu ward of Male' City on Friday night. It is suspected that the men were involved in assaulting, kidnapping and attempting to force sexual activity with the woman.

In the court order for their remand, the two suspects were noted to have prior criminal records. According to the order, the alleged victim of the rape also has a prior criminal record.

Media reports of the incident detail that a woman had been seen forcefully taken inside a house, kicking and screaming, by two men near Lemongrass restaurant in Maafannu ward of the capital on Friday night. Maldives Police Service confirmed that the two men had been arrested from the street, which would in this case be the scene of the crime they are suspected from committing, as the woman had been forced inside a house on that street against her will.
