Vice President Faisal Naseem has inaugurated the projects to construct a new and modern powerhouse and restore the sewerage system of the southern city of Fuvahmulah.

During a virtual reception to inaugurate the projects, the vice president noted that the inception of the projects would address and resolve the several difficulties facing Fuvahmulah residents due to the outdated system.

Highlighting that the city was in dire need for a new and modern powerhouse and the restoration of the sewerage system, VP Naseem expressed hope that the newly inaugurated projects will bring a permanent solution to issues being faced by the city residents.

He went on to reiterate the government’s commitment to introduce further progress to the southern city, while empowering local councils to utilize their natural resources to enhance development projects.

The new powerhouse, once completed, will have the capacity to generate 20 megawatts with five new generators. This is a major step up in comparison to the 5.4 megawatts of power generated from the current powerhouse.

The project is contracted to be completed within 18 months and is expected to be operated for up to 30-40 years.

Further, the restoration project of the city’s sewerage system is contracted to FENAKA Corporation to be completed within six months. Under the contract, FENAKA will establish new vacuum sewers, new vacuum valves and a new monitoring system that is expected to ease the operation of the system.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, FENAKA’s Managing Director Ahmed Saeed noted that the issue facing the Fuvahmulah sewerage system has proven to be the biggest challenge to the corporation since the incumbent administration came into power during November 2018.

He added that the fact that the system was left in shambles proves how reckless the previous administration was and that the incumbent administration aims to carry out all projects effectively.

Saeed stated that the team of engineers from FENAKA had faced a number of difficulties in identifying the solutions for the issues within the system during their analysis, adding that the incumbent president has assisted in the process. As such, he noted that FENAKA had shared the issues identified within the system with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who had instruction the company to resolve said issues so that the city residents may find effective solutions to their essential needs as soon as possible.

Further, the president had also provided solutions to acquiring funds for the project.

The project to restore Fuvahmulah City’s sewerage system was contracted to FENAKA during February and the government has allocated a total of MVR 43 million from the state budget.
