Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stressed on the importance of enhancing women’s abilities through evidence-based planning in order to lead a “just” transition into an inclusive green economy.
The foreign minister made this remark while delivering a message at the Generation Equality Forum’s thematic panel on Feminist Action for Climate Justice, organized by UN Women and co-hosted by the governments of Mexico and France.
As such, he stated that it is of utmost importance to listen to the experiences of women to amplify their stories of decision-making power imbalances as well as to enhance female ability through evidence-based planning, in order to lead a just transition to an inclusive, circular, regenerative and green economy.
As you have heard today, this includes enabling women and girls in their full diversity to lead a just-transition to an inclusive, circular, regenerative, green economy. For this to happen, we need to hear their lived experiences. Let them amplify their stories of decision-making power imbalances and enhance their abilities through evidence-based planning. Further, he shed light on the impact of climate change on the livelihoods of women across the globe, which has been worsened in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the panel discussion FM Shahid welcomed the Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ) Action Blueprint identifying the roots of climate crises and gender inequalities, along with the public, private and social inducements that support inequalities.
The ‘Action Blueprint’ paves a path towards tackling the definitive issue of the 21st century, by acknowledging systemic inequities.
Highlighting that the Feminist Action for Climate Justice Coalition is an opportunity to connect the drive of climate action to pave way for more gender- and climate-equitable economic and political systems, especially as the globe inspires to build back better and more resilient in response to the ongoing pandemic.
Maldives is a co-lead of the Feminist Action for Climate Justice Coalition of the Generation Equality Forum, which is a multi-stakeholder worldwide gathering that celebrates the power of women’s rights activism, feminist solidarity and youth leadership to boost the implementation of ambitious global commitments for gender equality in the UN Decade of Action
The Forum was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 29 and is set to conclude in Paris during June 2021.
