Maldives has received the annual donation of dates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs revealed that the donation of 25 tonnes of dates, was handed over during a ceremony held on Sunday.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali received the donation during the ceremony held at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in the Maldives.
Each year the Maldives receives a donation of 50 tonnes of dates from the Saudi Kingdom in time for the fasting month of Ramadan, which has been reduced to half the amount this ongoing year.
The ministry is expected to begin distributing packs of dates among the public soon. During 2020, the ministry prioritized the less-fortunate when distributing the date packs.
Nearly 20,000 individuals are registered in the country as poor people, with over 3,000 being registered in the capital city alone.
