The People's Majlis has approved the appointment of Dr. Mohamed Zahir to the Elections Commission (EC) with a vote held on Tuesday.

Dr. Mohamed Zahir was appointed to the vacant seat on the Elections Commission (EC) by a unanimous vote on behalf of 37 members of parliament who were present at the time.

The Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions had previously reviewed Dr. Mohamed Zahir's appointment to the Elections Commission and approved the choice through discussions held within the committee.

Dr. Mohamed Zahir was appointed to the Elections Commission to the seat vacated when the Commission's vice president Ahmed Akram resigned from his position in November last year. At the time of Akram's resignation, the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions had already initiated procedure to have him removed from his position.

The Elections Commission is now preparing to host the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections, slated to be conducted on 10 April 2021.
