Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will convene for their 172nd National Council meeting on Sunday night, with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed set to address members of MDP, and the election of a new Secretary General for the party slated on the agenda.

The MDP National Council will be held on Sunday night between 8:30pm and 10:30pm via zoom. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed are set to address the members of MDP at the meeting, as members are also given updates on MDP's efforts for the upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections scheduled for April 10.

Also slated on the agenda is the election of a new Secretary General for MDP, which will also be conducted at Sunday night's convening of the National Council.

This will be the 172nd meeting for the Maldivian Democratic Party's National Council since the party's inception.

As main-ruling party MDP continues preparations for the fast approaching Local Council and WDC elections, the party aims to set an example for following the health and safety guidelines as set forth by the Health Protection Agency to campaign and vote in elections during a state of public health emergency. MDP continues to conduct online and virtual campaigning efforts under the launching of their "Rahvehi Fathis" campaign.

While the Maldives continues to battle an increasingly devastating third wave of infections from the global Covid-19 pandemic, MDP had decided previously that the party would be continuing their operations online or through virtual means, including campaign for the Local Council and WDC elections, in order to curb the spread of Covid-19.
