The government plans to begin work on the new ‘Elderly Village’ this year.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed this during his address at the inaugural session of the People’s Majlis last Thursday, revealing that the Elderly Village will be established in southernmost Addu City.

He said that the purpose of this is “to enable dignified lives for senior citizens”.

Solih announced plans to establish the country’s first-ever housing programme targeting elders left without care, during his first presidential address in 2019.

Officials previously revealed that work was ongoing to open two homes for elderly citizens including in the capital.

Further, the government is to begin work on establishing a Disability Management and Rehabilitation Centre to integrate services offered for people with disabilities under one roof, as well as a Child Development Centre in Hulhumale’ Hospital to provide therapy for children with special needs.
