Covid-19: Maldives records highest daily rise in December

Maldives reported 47 new cases of the global Covid-19 pandemic on Wednesday, the highest rise in daily cases this concluding month.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed 30 of the new cases in the Greater Malé Region, 15 from operational resorts and two from residential islands.

The new cases were confirmed from the 2,974 samples tested within 24 hours.

Further, the authority reported 16 additional recoveries from the virus, which pushes the total number of Covid-19 recoveries in the island nation, to 13,125.

Maldives Covid-19 tally currently sits at 13,738.

Out of the 558 active coronavirus cases across Maldives, 29 patients are hospitalized for treatment.

Health officials have collected 314,249 samples for coronavirus testing, since the first few cases surfaced from a resort on March 7.

Over the course of the past week, the public health authority confirmed over 200 Covid-19 infections. As such, the lowest daily rise in cases was reported on Monday, at 16, the highest being Wednesday’s cases.

The country’s Covid-19 death toll is at 48, which makes a mortality rate of 0.35 percent.
