Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected over Maldives for the next 48 hours.

Maldives Meteorological Service said that fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected over the country during the next 48 hours “under the influence of the persisting trough”.

Further, strong winds and rough seas are likely between Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls.

The Service advised all to be cautious of the upcoming severe weather conditions, especially seafarers between central and northern atolls. Those residing in flood prone islands have been advised to take the necessary precautions as well.

As per the general weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning, seas are expected to be moderate becoming rough during showers in central and northern atolls and slight to moderate in southern atolls.

Surface winds will vary between north-east/easterly at 13 – 23 miles per hour in northern and central atolls, and southwest/westerly at 5 – 15 miles per hour in southern atolls.

Winds may gust to 40 miles per hour during showers in northern and central atolls.
