An individual native to Thinadhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll has passed away while fishing.

RaajjeMV understands the deceased has been identified as Ibrahim Shah who convicted of marital rape in early October.

The death has been confirmed from Gaaf Alif Atoll Hospital. Hospital officials revealed that an individual who died while out fishing, was taken to the hospital and that there were no visible signs of injuries on him.

Shah, 40, was found guilty over the death of his wife, Ziyadha Naeem, 37 from the same island. She died during December 2015 due to life-threatening injuries caused by marital rape. Police had disclosed that their investigation of Ziyadha's case found evidence of physical and sexual assault which was corroborated by her autopsy report.

He was charged with marital rape, a reckless act leading to the death of a person, and negligence – leading to the death of a person as well as the possession of pornographic material, however, while the trial began in 2016, Criminal Court acquitted Shah on all charges last year, leading to public criticism towards the Criminal Court and the country's judicial system.

The lower court’s ruling was appealed at the High Court shortly after and Shah was sentenced to three years after marital rape accusations against him were proven. However, he was freed as he was kept in remand pending the outcome of the trial, for over three years.
