Financial statements publicized by the People’s Majlis shows that the speaker earned more than MVR 3 million as salaries and allowances within a year.

Financial records of MPs have been published on the Majlis website.

According to this, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed earned MVR 3,185,036.09 as salaries and allowances from May 2019 to May 2020.

Nasheed earns MVR 73,125 per month as salary as parliament speaker. This was reduced to MVR 62,500 as part of the work to reduce cost amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

A former president, Nasheed is Also entitled to allowances, accommodation allowances and office management costs worth MVR 172,000; MVR 75,000 as allowances, MVR 10,000 as accommodation allowance and MVR 87,000 as office management cost.

He recently requested against providing him the both allowances eligible to former presidents, and now only collects MVR 87,000 for office management. He also uses the security services.

As per the former president’s financial statement, he earned MVR 36,029 as bank interests.

It also shows that Nasheed has accounts in three banks with funds totaling MVR 1,715,224.78.

While the financial records does not show any loans or shares owned by the speaker in any company, it shows that he owns land in Gan island of Laamu atoll.
