The People’s Majlis has passed the consumer protection bill.
The motion was passed with the votes from 62 members at Tuesday’s sitting.
The state-submitted bill revolves around drafting rights of individuals consuming and selling goods in the Maldives as well as protecting the rights of the consumer market.
Further, the bill also mandates the establishment of responsibilities of those selling goods as well as forming a set of guidelines and criterion to provide these services to consumers. Action required to be taken against service providers who go against the set guidelines has also been provided in the motion.
The bill was drafted to provide solutions for the several challenges facing consumers as well as establish a consumer ombudsman office.
Duties and responsibilities of the consumer ombudsman have also been detailed in the motion.
