Six additional officers of the Maldives Police Service have tested positive for the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee programme on Saturday, Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla revealed that the six officers had been active in arresting a drug suspect during an operation.
He added that a lot of effort is being put into maintaining the people’s trust in the police institution and that reform efforts are also underway.
Highlighting that the people’s trust in an institution heavily depends on its operations, Imran noted that the police's current operations are being conducted with a lot of difficulties and hindrances.
The minister went on to stress that some of the institution’s work has been halted due to a number of officers testing positive for Covid-19.
Shedding light on the special efforts to improve and reform the institution, Minister Imran stated that he believes MPS has been freed from the clutches of political influence.
He further revealed that there are a number of officers currently active in adhering to professional standards and are acquiring special training from regions across the globe.
