Maldives reopened its borders on July 15, after nearly four months of closure

A webinar targeting the Indian travel market, was held on Wednesday.

The webinar was conducted by the Maldives High Commission in India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Consulate General in Thiruvananthapuram.

The foreign ministry said that the purpose of the webinar was “to raise awareness about the measures being taken to ensure the safety of tourists in the Maldives, following the opening up of the borders and tourism industry on 15 July 2020.”

The participants highlighted that variou safety and precautionary measures taken against the current pandemic at the airport, at tourist establishments, as well as the health sector preparations.

While 181 outbound tour operators across India and prominent media from India participated in the webinar, the foreign ministry said that the participants had indicated “keenness of Indian travellers to visit the Maldives once borders reopen in India.”

Maldives has become a popular destination for India travellers; it was the second largest source market in tourism for the Maldives in 2019.

The island nation reopened its borders and restarted the tourism industry on July 15, days after it entered the third phase of Covid-19 lockdown easing. Authorities have said that the safety and well-being of the visitors and well as the people, is of the utmost priority.
