The Islamic University of the Maldives is scheduled to host the previous year’s graduation ceremony as soon as the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation improves.

In an interview with RaajjeTV’s Covid-19 Coverage, IUM’s Registrar, Ahmed Rauf Abdulla revealed that the Maldives fell into the Covid-19 situation at a time the university was almost fully prepared to host the graduation ceremony for 2019.

Rauf revealed that they had even rented a few halls at Dharubaaruge for the ceremony, however, the government stepped in due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), the government’s Covid-19 task force is headquartered at Dharubaaruge.

The university had decided to indefinitely postpone the ceremony as it is unsafe to hold such a major event during such critical circumstances.

We had lost hope that we could proceed with the ceremony when the government began taking back the halls we rented from Dharubaaruge. After that we started discussions with the planning ministry to determine when the halls will be made available at the earliest. The ministry revealed that they are also unsure on an exact date the situation will change”
Ahmed Rauf Abdulla, Registrar

Although the graduation ceremony has been delayed, the university will hand over student certificates as soon as the university reopens for operations.

IUM has implemented a number of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their students, at a time the authorities have closed off all educational institutions due to the pandemic.

As such, course fees have been reduced by 20% for 2020 and discussions have also been held with telecommunication service providers to provide 5GB free data for students.

The university has also ensured that students will be given the opportunity to continue with their courses, which have been halted due to several reasons.
