The government of Maldives has condemned the ‘deadly’ terrorist attack in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Monday.

In a tweet sent out on Monday night, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim sent condolences to all the victims and their families, following the explosion between two underground stations in Sr. Petersburg.

The blast that hit a train between Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut stations on Monday killed eleven people, and injured more than 45.

According to Russia’s Anti-Terrorist Committee, an explosive device was later found at another station nearby "and made safe".

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has, via Facebook, described the explosion as “a terrorist attack”.

While authorities have launched a criminal case over the blast, they said all other possible causes will be considered as well.

Russian President Vladamir Putin was in St. Petersburg, his hometown, at the time and sent condolences to the victim’s families. In the evening, he laid flowers outside the station where the damaged train arrived after blast.

Noting that the “causes are not clear” the Russian President had said that all possibilities will be looked into, including “terrorism as well as common crime”. He met with security chiefs late Monday night.

Saint Petersburg is Russia’s second largest city after Moscow, with over five million people. The St. Petersburg metro system is the 19th busiest in the world, with more than two million passengers every day.
