Covid-19 response efforts in the Maldives
Velaa Private Island donates essentials including 10k testing kits to support Maldives Covid-19 response

Owners of luxurious five-star resort, Velaa Private Island, Jiri Smejc and Daniel Kretinsky are to provide a donation of essential equipment to battle the Novel Cornavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, to the Maldivian government.

It has been reported that Smejc and Kretinsky will donate 10,000 testing kits, five ventilators, 10,000 face masks, 200 respirators as well as Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs).

Some of the equipment are set to arrive on Saturday, as both owners are set to land at Maafaru Airport via two respective chartered jets on Saturday.

Czech billionaire Smejc introduced the luxury resort to the Maldives tourism industry during 2014 after countless trips to the island nation and Kretinsky, another Czech billionaire joined him as a shareholder of the resort during 2017.

With a net worth of USD 3.4 billion, Kretinsky is the owner of the Energy Holding Group (EPH) with assets through Europe. He made the announcement of having contracted the Covid-19 virus on March 30, however, his recovery has not been confirmed yet.
