Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested four individuals for stealing a boat without the owner’s knowledge in Raa atoll.

The boat is to have been stolen while it was in Ungoofaaru island’s lagoon and the group is to have taken it to Maakurathu island in the same atoll.

The theft case was reported to police a little past 12am on Thursday.

Arrested in the case are two 18-year-olds, a 28-year-old and a 29-year-old. They were arrested close to 1am on Thursday.

The case is under further investigations.

This comes at a time a State of Public Health Emergency has been declared across the entire Maldives by the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, a community transmission has also been observed in the country’s capital, after which stringent measures were put in place. This includes banning travel between all inhabited islands.

Police earlier warned of legal action against violators of the measures and orders placed by the government.
