The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has revealed that over 500 individuals volunteered to deliver goods to households across capital city Malé.

The ministry opened the opportunity for interested volunteers to deliver goods to households in the capital city on 17 April.

As such, over 500 individuals sent SMSs to 7335426 when the opportunity opened, said the ministry.

Further, it has been noted that volunteers will be following the instructions given by authorities to take all the necessary protective measures before the operation begins.

Volunteers will be contact through 7770779.

Although the number of volunteers exceeds 500, the ministry has opted to use as less personnel as possible due to the high level of risk involved in the operation due to the current Covid-19 situation across the capital region.

As such, the ministry revealed that they will be reaching out to the numbers they did not respond to, after completing the vetting process.

For the time being, all individuals have been urged by the ministry to stay home and practice social distancing.

Ever since the emergence of the first ever community transmission in Malé City, there have been 15 confirmed cases from the city within the past few days and the government announced a lockdown for a 24-hour period. It has since been extended to two weeks and the authorities have been working tirelessly to ensure that the people have access to basic necessities and essentials during these challenging times.

It was also revealed that one individual from each household will be permitted to go out for essentials, once every three days.
