Communications’ Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal is not pleased with MP Mickail Naseem’s call to lower internet prices.
The young lawmaker on Tuesday revealed his request to summon members of the Communications Authority of Maldives to the parliament, to inquire on “why no special measures have been taken to ensure lower internet prices” during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Mickail stressed that the internet “has become a necessity” as everyone is urged to stay home to stop the spread of the virus.
When RaajjeMV contacted the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology for a comment, he said that it “is not that smart” to bring up things that could lose focus of the Covid-19 pandemic that has also reached the Maldives.
Furthermore, Maleeh said that they are working with telecommunications’ companies to ease services to the people but that there will be some issue as everyone is using the internet at once.
He added that companies have brought changes to some procedures as well as introduced special packages, including to the education ministry which intends to carry teleclasses for the duration that schools are closed.
The communications’ minister also stressed that the ministry and communications authority are working to reduce internet prices as per the incumbent administration’s strategic action plan, adding that this is being done together with President’s Office’s policy office.
He added that lawmakers from the ruling party will be aware of this as well as the progress; MP Mickail represents the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
