Relevant government institutions and top officials at the President’s Office have held discussions on setting a minimum wage, with the Cabinet of Ministers.

The discussions were held at the President’s Office, during the Cabinet Working Session on Tuesday.

While discussions touched down on methods to introduce and implement a minimum wage policy in “the most effective manner”, they also revolved around the outcomes expected from introducing a minimum wage on the State Budget 2020, as well as inflation rates, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), foreign reserve, exchange rate, regional disparities, public and private sectors, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well as the entire economy, as a whole.

Further, featured during the session were presentations compiled by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The report featured findings of two reports initially compiled on the matter by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Salary and Wage Advisory Board (SAWAB).

SAWAB was established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during May 2019.
