LCE2020: MDP received 1,364 valid submissions
Primaries are set to be held on 31 January
Constituencies for Kulhudhuffushi City to be announced on Saturday evening

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed that they received over 1,000 valid submission forms for its primaries for the upcoming Local Council Elections.

By the time the deadline reached, the party received 1,364 valid forms, said MDP.

MDP’s electoral committee’s vice chairperson and north-Henveiru MP Ibrahim Muizzu stated that they received over 1,400 forms overall out of which 1,364 were valid.

Further, MP Muizzu stated that the low turn-out was caused by some applicants having withdrawn their names and lack of information applicants had regarding the constituencies they were vying for.

Highlighting that the problem surfaced mostly for those who applied for island councils, Muizzu stated that they are reaching out to those applicants and inquiring them about their desired constituency.

The latest information revealed by MDP reveals that seven individuals are up for Malé City Mayor and 41 are contesting for membership. Three are contesting for Addu City Mayor and 41 for Addu City council.

Further, four are contesting for Fuvahmulah City Mayor with 11 applicants up for membership.

Muizzu went on to reveal that the opportunity to contest for the newly declared city, Kulhudhuffushi, will be opened on Saturday night.

With preparations for the party’s primaries underway, MDP is also set to begin its North Councilors’ Conference on Sunday. An MDP delegation led by Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed is set to embark on a trip to attend the conference.

While the Local Council Election 2020 is slated for 4 April, campaigns have been launched nationwide. It is the first election to be held since amendments were brought to the decentralization act.

Only members registered at the party before 2pm on 31 December 2019 will be allowed to contest or cast their ballots in the party primaries, revealed MDP, who went on to reveal that the voter's list for the primaries will be publicized on 6 January and the final list of candidates will be revealed on 13 January with a three-day period to submit complaints.

The final voters’ list will be publicized on 15 January.
