The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office is working “closely” with the police, in Gasim Hassan’s murder investigation.

Newly appointed PG, Hussaim Shameem, announced this via Twitter late Friday night, after the police commissioner revealed that the suspect arrested over the murder has since confessed. Commissioner Mohamed Hameed added that the institution is currently working “on the corroboration of evidences and further forensics.”

The PG’s comment was in response to an inquiry by a Twitter user, asking whether such cases cannot be fast-tracked through the PG Office.

He responded that the issue with doing so is that “if he retracts his confession we will have to rely on evidence.”

Hence, the prosecutor general said that it is always better to collect all evidence when possible, adding that this is the “best practice too.”

59-year-old Gasim Hassan, a taxi driver, was stabbed to death on the night of 4 December; he was found lying face-down in a puddle of blood and pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Police on December 12 announced that they had new leads in the murder, having retrieved crucial evidence from the murder scene including fingerprints and DNA. They also found the murder weapon, about 300 metres away from where Gasim’s body was discovered in Hulhumalé.

The police commissioner also revealed that the clothes the culprit wore when he committed the murder were also recovered in the investigation, adding that forensic evidence “has been the key to solving the case.”
