Juvenile Court Judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf has been suspended over allegations of receiving funds through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) case of graft, the largest embezzlement case in the country’s history.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) revealed the judge’s suspension on Thursday, adding that Baaree is accused of being involved among the individuals who received the misappropriated funds and that they have enough information to launch a criminal investigation against him.
Police have since launched an investigation into the judge’s alleged involvement in the graft.
Following his suspension, the commission has also begun probing disciplinary issues linked to the judge.
MMPRC’s graft case saw the misappropriation of MVR 1.4 billion (US$90 million) through state coffers into private accounts involving senior government officials. However, the presidential commission had recently revealed that the amount reaches MVR three billion.
