President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Hussain Shameem to the post of Prosecutor General (PG).
Shameem’s letter of appointment was presented at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office on Sunday.
The appointment was made as per Article 221 of the Constitution and Article 3 of the Prosecutor General’s Act.
Hussain Shameem holds a Master of Laws in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice from the University of Sussex, the United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Arts in Shari’a and Law from the Al-Azhar University in Egypt.
He served as the deputy prosecutor general twice, from 4th February 2009 to 4th October 2012 as well as from 12th November 2013 to 5th May 2014. He had served in the clemency board as well.
74 MPs voted in favour of Shameem’s appointment, on Saturday.
The PG post had been vacant since Aishath Bisham’s resignation on November 28. Her resignation came amid an impeachment inquiry parliament, which she claims “is in violation of the constitution.”
