Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed, has stated that new islands available for lease for tourism purposes will be announced on Thursday next week.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of an inspection training for tourism facilities, the minister stated that the islands leased for tourism are connected to the hopes of the people, therefore, it is the cabinet's duty to fulfill the electoral pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
As such, the minister declared that the new islands available to be leased for tourism will be announced on December 12.
The minister added that these islands were deemed fit for lease after consulting with the relevant authorities and experts with consideration to the most profitable avenues for the citizen.
Likewise, members of parliament, councilors and ministries were also consulted regarding the matter, said the minister.
The incumbent government has undertaken many efforts to develop the tourism industry in such a way which also benefits the common man. Hence, 27 islands were assessed for local tourism by the ministry last October. While some islands have been completely assessed, others are currently undergoing assessment.
