Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions has announced that interview sessions for candidates who vied for membership at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) have been scheduled for next week.
The committee is set to interview candidates who vied for ECM membership on 22 October while those who are contesting for membership at NIC will be interviewed the following day, on 23 October.
The President’s Office announced the opportunity for applications as the expiration of ECM Vice President Amjad Mustafa’s term nears, on 4 November.
Mustafa has since forwarded his application to contest for a second term.
Names of the four members nominated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih out of the 10 who contested, were heard at the parliament sitting held on 2 October.
The four are, former Elections Commissioner Fuwad Thowfeeq, current Vice President Mustafa, Hassan Nazim and Mariyam Haneefa Khalid.
The People’s Majlis has opened opportunity for complaint submissions until 2pm, Tuesday.
Four names were also forwarded for NIC membership, to parliament; Shuaib Abdul Rahman, Colonel (Rtd) Ahmed Jihad, Dr. Mariyam Shahuneeza Naseer and Hawwa Liusha.
NIC membership opportunity was opened following the resignation of member Mohamed Faruhaad.
National Integrity Commission was established in 2016, during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.
Applications for NIC membership was first opened in February, with Solih sending his nominations to parliament shortly after.
