The captain of the tugboat in which former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb had attempted to flee, has been banned from leaving Maldives.

The former VP had attempted to flee from Thoothukudi, India earlier in August on Virgo-9, a tugboat registered in Singapore.

While authorities has revealed that they have launched investigations into Adeeb’s failed escape plan, the nine crewmen onboard Virgo-9 during the attempt have also been brought to the country.

The boat is not allowed to depart the Maldives without Maldives Customs' approval and its captain is also prohibited from leaving the country.

However, police emphasized the rest of the crew members have no such restrictions and that "none of the crew members have been apprehended."

Adeeb was handed over to Maldives security and he was brought back to Maldives on 4 August.

Supreme Court had on 8 August, ordered for Adeeb to be kept in remand until the conclusion of the case regarding his involvement in embezzlement.

Police have also assured the public that they would be taking legal action against those who aided in Adeeb’s failed escape plan.
