Names of candidates for the post of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) member to represent the general public, have been forwarded to the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee.

The names were heard at Tuesday's sitting and were forwarded to the parliament floor by Secretary General Fathmath Niusha.

The candidates are Khalid Gasim, Zubair Ahmed Manik and Mirfath Faiz.

The opportunity was opened as the current member of JSC representing the general public, Abdul Hannan Ahmed’s tenure is coming to an end.

Lawyer Hannan was appointed during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, on 12 August 2014.

According to the Maldives Constitution, JSC is to consist of the Speaker of Parliament, a judge of the Supreme Court other than the Chief Justice, a judge of the High Court, a judge of the Trial Courts, a member of the Parliament, a member of the general public, the chair of the Civil Service Commission, a person appointed by the president, the Attorney General and a lawyer.

The member representing the public shall have a tenure of five years.

Parliament opened the opportunity to vie for the seat on 16 July.
