Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said that he will stop the inhumane treatment of prisoners.
The Home Minister said this in a tweet after the media reported on the recent alleged abuse in Maafushi Prison.
In the tweet, Minister Imran expressed his belief that not enough changes have been made to solve the current issues in prisons.
Minister Imran said that prison reform will take longer than people wish and urged officers of the correctional service to refrain from abusing their authority, warning them that action will be taken against abusive officers.
He also said that political influence can no longer be gained by causing disorder in prisons.
RaajjeMV understands that Minister Imran visited Maafushi Prison after the recent incident.
The media reported that, after a prisoner assaulted an officer in Maafushi Prison on Thursday, officers had taken out five prisoners from their cells, handcuffed and dropped them to the ground before beating them with batons and pepper spraying their groin area. However, the correctional service has denied the claims.
The parliament will be looking into the incident during the human rights and gender committee on Tuesday at 11am.
