Local telecommunications giant Ooredoo Maldives has introduced eSIM services to Maldives market on Sunday.

The new generation service was launched to the Maldives market by Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed, and CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Maldives, Najib Khan during a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge on Sunday morning.

The telecom provider stated that the brand new service was launched as part of their efforts to connect Maldives to the latest technologies and global ICT sector’s innovative services.

Always at the forefront on bringing the latest technology to the Maldives market, Ooredoo further revealed that the eSIMs will be made available for prepaid, postpaid and tourist plan customers with a compatible phone such as iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and Google Pixel 3.

While Ooredoo customers will be the first to experience eSIMs in the country, they are downloadable contrary to the physical SIMs that are currently being used.

The telecom giant said that customers may use up to nine numbers on the same phone via the new service which allows convenience to the tourists arriving in the country.

Customers have to visit the Ooredoo eSIM page, select the eSIM plan of their choosing, register their phone numbers and pay online, then submit the QR code to receive their phones and activate their plans.

While the Maldivian economy is heavily dependent on tourism, it has been understood that tourists who visit the country can activate a tourist SIM from the moment their flight lands at the airport through this service, hence boosting the country’s tourist industry.

Further, Ooredoo revealed that their customers are not required to go through the hassle of purchasing a SIM when travelling to other countries, through these eSIMS. As such, they may enjoy uninterrupted services through an additional download.
