President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Nasheed was presented his Letter of Appointment during a meeting held at the President’s Office on Tuesday night, shortly followed by his appointment as Parliament Speaker during Tuesday night’s inaugural sitting,
The appointment was made under Article 158 (h) of the Maldives’ Constitution and Article 3 (1) of the Judicial Service Act.
On Tuesday night, Nasheed took oath of membership at the commission, administered by Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi.
During a meeting followed by the appointment, Speaker Nasheed had assured that he would cooperate with Solih’s government to implement policies that are of national interest. He also said that he would consult lawmakers individually and collectively with all political parties to fulfill his duties.
Solih had expressed that the new constitution was maintained through efforts put in by a lot of people, adding that he expects high of the legislature.
Shedding light on the importance of the Speaker’s duties, Solih expressed his confidence that Nasheed will carry out his work smoothly and fairly.
