Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof has said that current main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) “taught Maldivians how to welcome differing opinions.”

The minister said this in regards to the ongoing battle within the party, as multiple members express interest in becoming speaker.

While a total of five MDP lawmakers have expressed interest for the post in the 19th parliament, the toughest competition is between North-Hithadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Aslam and Vilufushi constituency MP-elect Hassan Afeef.

MDP’s leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed has supported Aslam for speaker since April’s parliamentary election, while it was recently reported that incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is endorsing Afeef.

To add fuel to the fire, during a recent interview, the president noted that both Aslam and Afeef are “experienced parliamentarians” and that Afeef is “one of the most” capable persons for the position.

This has led to a dispute within MDP, with members forming factions on social media and condemning both leaders.

However, Minister Mahloof said that there is “no issue” with supporting a certain person.

“President Solih and President Nasheed could also have different opinions. This is no reason to call one another [names]. It is MDP that taught Maldivians to give room for differing opinions,” reads his tweet.

He added that the ruling party does not want votes from opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC).

Earlier this week, PNC’s deputy leader Ahmed Nihan announced support for Afeef, saying that its stands with President Solih. While he also claimed that PPM has decided the same, its deputy Ahmed Shiyam denied that the party has made a decision of the matter.

However, he indicated that the party will vote for MDP’s nomination.

MDP is to decide on its nominee for speaker on May 27, the night before the newly elected MPs take oath of office.
