Ministry receives over MVR 500k as Zakat Al-Fitr
 
Islamic Ministry begian accepting Zakat Al-Fitr on 7 May

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs had received over MVR 500,000 for Zakat-Al-Fitr up till Tuesday.

The ministry revealed that they had received a total of MVR 557،340 up until Tuesday, as Zakat payments for the ongoing fasting month of Ramadan 1440.

The ministry received payments:

  • MVR 299،945 through the ministry,
  • MVR 153،940 through the national bank, Bank of Maldives (BML),
  • MVR 9،395 through the Malé City Council,
  • MVR 30،340 through the Housing Development Corporation (HDC),
  • MVR 33،465 through Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB),
  • MVR 16،755 through local telecommunications provider Dhiraagu and
  • MVR 13،480 through local telecom provider Ooredoo Maldives.

The amount for Zakat is deemed to be money worth 2.4 kg of rice grain per person. Islamic Ministry has said that one must donate money worth 2.4 kg of the general type of rice grains used by the individual throughout the year. The average person in Male' has to pay MVR 13 per person if calculated with normal rice grains, MVR 43 if its Thai rice grains and MVR 81 if its Basmati rice as Zakat al Fitr.

The ministry revealed that they will be accepting Zakat payments till 02 June. The ministry began accepting Zakat payments on the second day of Ramadan, at respective centers in the Greater Malé Region and will proceed accepting payments from 09:30 am to 12 pm until 02 June.

Only people registered as heavily low-income families or individuals will receive Zakat.
