The protest was a performance art piece titled “Homeless Artists” staged by Fine Art Maldives. In their statement, the group questioned the current state of the art gallery and its representation of the level of priority reserved for the arts by the Maldivian government.
They stated that the art gallery should display paintings and art depicting the evolution of the culture and tradition of the country but is instead being rented out for events that are not related to the arts.
"Stop pimping out our home" reads one of the slogans painted on the man outside the National Art Gallery.
