Amendment bills to the Parliamentary Privileges Act propose to provide former MPs lifetime pay and benefits.

A total of three amendment bills to the Parliamentary Privileges Act have been proposed and were heard at Monday’s sitting.

The three bills were proposed by Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed and Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa, who have failed their re-election bids.

The amendments propose to provide 30% percent of the parliamentarian’s salary to one-term MPs and 45% to MPs who have served two terms.

Other benefits for former MPs include providing diplomatic passports to them and their spouses, health insurance for their spouses and children, and airport VIP services.

There are 30 days left remaining until the end of the current MPs’ terms and more than 60 MPs lost their re-election bid in the election.
