Some prominent lawmakers have lost their re-election bids in Saturday’s parliamentary election, interim results show.
This includes, former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group leader and current majority leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, People’s National Congress (PNC)’s acting leader and Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Thimarafushi constituency MP Mohamed Musthafa, as well as South-Kulhudhuffushi constituency MP Mohamed Nasheed and Dhihdhoo constituency MP Ahmed Latheef Mohamed.
RaajjeTV’s preliminary results show that that main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has majority in parliament, with 62 seats.
Opposition PPM and PNC have a total of five seats, while Jumhooree Party (JP) won seven seats. In addition, Adhaalath Party has won two seats while seven independent candidates secured seats.
