President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has on Monday inaugrated the 'Centre for Mental Health'.
The facility is located at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, and will provide treatments covered by the national health insurance scheme Aasandha.
The centre will provide conseling services, as well as hold awareness programmes for the public.
Establishing the centre was one of the new government's first 100-day agenda, and it was further eloborated in President Solih address at the People's Majlis inaugral sitting this year.
President Solih had said that the government intends to propose a draft bill on mental health, which will further support treatment for mental illnesses in the Maldives.
In 2015, the then government introduced a 'National Mental Health Policy' which stands through to 2025. The policy paper states that studies into prevalence of mental health illnesses in the Maldives is insufficient.
A nation-wide survery in 2015 has 30 percent of all respondents saying they suffer from a mental health condition. Five percent had said they suffer from anxiety.
