Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to work together with coalition partner Adhaalath Party (AP), in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, MDP said that it will be backing Adhaalath’s candidates for Nilandhoo and Mahibadhoo constituencies in the election. It added that both parties will be campaigning together as well.
While the ruling party decided to compete for all 87 constituencies in the parliamentary elections, there were no applicants for Nilandhoo constituency and the candidate for Mahibadhoo constituency withdrew his candidacy earlier on Sunday.
MDP’s statement further welcomed Adhaalath’s decision to support its ‘Agenda 19,’ which details the party’s pledges for the 19th parliament.
The ruling coalition comprises of four parties, however, one of the parties have decided to form a coalition with former President Abdulla Yameen’s opposition coalition.
Accusing MDP of violating coalition agreements, Jumhooree Party (JP) made the decision to work together with the opposition in the parliamentary elections, but says that it will remain a part of the ruling coalition as well.
Adhaalath had in February requested MDP to give up five constituencies for the party. However, MDP’s candidates were against relinquishing tickets. Mahibadhoo constituency was among the five.
