Parties in the government coalition had entered into an agreement on working together for this year’s parliamentary elections, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group leader MP Mohamed Aslam has said.

The north-Hithadhoo constituency representative spoke to RaajjeTV on Sunday, and said that an agreement was reached between the parliamentary groups of MDP, Jumhooree Party (JP), and the Adhaalath Party (AP), three of four ruling parties.

MP Aslam said that, under such an agreement, the three parties will be recognised as a single ‘bloc’ and grants a clear majority for the government.

At Sunday’s interview, MP Aslam spoke in support of the idea to form an electoral bloc made up of members from each coalition party, which he said would help the government maintain this majority.

Aslam highlighted the importance of this by speaking about legislation currently being filibustered in the People’s Majlis, where bills proposed years ago have remained without being brought to a vote.

While Aslam’s sentiments are a such, MDP contesting for all but one constituency in the upcoming parliamentary elections will mean their candidates will run against those from parties in the government coalition.
