Parliamentarians aligned with the newly formed People’s National Congress (PNC) have filed a case of no-confidence against MP Rozaina Adam, chair of the People’s Majlis Committee on Independent Institutions.

A letter from three MPs, states that Addu-Meedho constituency MP Rozaina has exercised political bias in rejecting opposing their call to summon the public prosecutor and police chief for committee questioning.

Their case was to summon Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham and acting commissioner of police Mohamed Hameed over the recent allegations of money laundering against former president Abdulla Yameen, for which has been remanded until sentencing.

On Monday, PNC leader and Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that the decision not go forward with the case was made personally by committee chair MP Rozaina.

MP Rozaina has defended her decision and said there exists a convention of ensuring committee affairs do not conflict with ongoing judicial proceedings, which she was following.

The PNC is formed of some of former president Yameen’s keener voices in parliament during his past tenure.
