Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has denied reports that it has stopped providing security services to former President Abdulla Yameen.

MDNF said that the information circulating on social media saying that it is no longer providing security to the former president "is false."

According to social media, it stopped providing security to Yameen on Tuesday.

"MNDF has not halted security to former President Yameen," said its media officer Ibrahim Azim.

According to the country's laws, former presidents are entitled to state benefits, security and privileges.

Article 128 of the constitution states that "a person who has served in the office of President, serving his term of office lawfully without committing any offence, shall be entitled to the highest honour, dignity, protection, financial privileges and other privileges entitled to a person who has served in the highest office of the land. Such protection and privileges shall be specified in law."
