Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party has held their inaugural gathering and assembled a temporary leadership committee.

While 317 members of the party had joined the inaugural gathering on Friday night, some party decisions had been passed at the event through votes.

Some of these included party name, flag design, logo design as well as a party color.

Red, Black and White are to represent the party, officially named “Maldives Labour and social Democratic Party," to be referred to as “Labour Party”. The decision was passed with 314 votes in favor out of 317 members.

All members had voiced their support for the basic guidelines which were also decided at the inaugural gathering.

The party has also assigned 15 members to its temporary leadership committee. Members who were passed with the greatest number of votes were Abdul Majeed Abdul Kareem and Ahmed Shiham who got votes from all 317 members. Aala Ibrahim Rasheed, who received 316 votes, was also appointed as a vice chairperson.

Mauroof Zakariyya, Ziyad Rashad and Mohamed Sadiq won 315 votes, Abdulla Haseen, who founded the party, won 314 votes.

Ibrahim Mujthaba, Mohamed Furqaan and Aminath Shaahee won 313 votes. Member Adam Shifau won 312 votes. Other members who won 310 votes include Khalid, Ali Akram and Ali Nazim. Last member is Shamsheer Rilwan with 305 votes.

At a committee meeting on Saturday, Shiham was elected as chairperson while Ziyad and Aala were elected as his deputies. Party founder Abdulla Haseen was appointed as general secretary, while Mauroof was elected as spokesperson and Kareem as treasurer. They were elected with the votes of all eight committee members present at the meeting.

Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), Teachers Association of Maldives, Dhivehi Seafarers and Labour Unit, Shin Emtee Maldives and Maldives Inland School Society had partnered up with the Labour Party to organize special activities.

The party is a center left party that has been formed under social justice and democracy regulations to work for international laborers.
