Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been elected as the leader of recently formed Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD).
The election was made through a vote at the party’s council meeting on Thursday. All of the members who joined the meeting voted in favor of electing the ex-VP as the party leader.
While the party leader has been elected, the party also elected the party’s founder Ismail Asif as it’s Senior Vice President and Member of Parliament for Velidhoo constituency Abdulla Yameen Rasheed as its Vice President.
Senior VP Asif assured the press after the vote for election that Adeeb has been elected as party leader within the legal mandate and after professional advice from law practitioners.
Former VP Adeeb was the first member to sign onto the party upon the Election’s Commission’s green light to form the party.
MTD was officially registered as a political party on Thursday.
Adeeb was elected as party leader despite being jailed for 33 years in prison over various counts of corruption and terrorism. He was transferred to house arrest under a doctor’s recommendation after a surgery earlier in December.
