Parliament members obliged to put interests of constituents first: Nasheed

Parliamentarians are constitutionally obliged to serve their constituencies and so put the interest of those that reside in them first, says former president Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed, who served in parliament for a number of years, said this while speaking at an event to launch the campaign for a candidate contesting in his Maldivian Democratic Party’s primary.
In his address, Nasheed said that parliamentarians must conduct themselves strictly with the purpose of representing their constituents and that it is a debt owed to the people.
Having said that political parties exist so as to give a voice to people, Nasheed highlighted that the Maldivian Democratic Party is the only one that always holds a primary election ahead of ballots.
Over 200 individuals are contesting in the party primary for next year’s parliamentary elections. The primary ballots are to be held in January.
The People’s Majlis elections are to be held on 9th April, the Elections Commission has said.
