President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s Cabinet of Ministers has on Tuesday decided to restore power and responsibilities of city councils, along granting additional ones.
The President's Office revealed details of the Cabinet meeting on its official website on Tuesday.
The cabinet made the decision as part of President Solih’s pledges for the first 100-days of his administration, as well as in accordance with the Decentralization Act, to transfer powers and responsibilities to the city councils, which was previously taken over by individual Ministries.
President's Office noted that while the newly transferred powers of the councils include the mandate to establish a system to assist and manage disasters for individuals in crisis, Ministers had on Tuesday agreed that the powers and responsibilities will be restored to councils in accordance with regulations and policies set by relevant Ministries.
As agreed at the cabinet meeting, the power and responsibilities to be transferred back under the jurisdiction of the councils, include authority to lease land, reefs and lagoons for the socioeconomic benefit of the community.
The cabinet made the decision to restore the powers and responsibilities of councils, restricted during former President Abdulla Yameen’s government, on the 04th of December.=
