President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled to attend this year’s Journalism Awards, set to be held the 11th of December.

While this is the first time a President is scheduled to attend the Journalism Awards, none of the previous presidents had attended the annual ceremony, held by the Maldives Media Council (MMC) to empower and appreciate journalists across the nation who strive to show quality in their performance.

RaajjeMV understands that alongside the newly-elected President, Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla and several other government officials will be in attendance this Tuesday.

These awards have been conferred annually since 2014 and there are eight categories under which they are conferred:

  1. Social category
  2. Politics category
  3. Legal category
  4. Business category
  5. Sports category
  6. Photo journalism category
  7. Video journalism category
  8. Feature category

Moreover, Most Promising Journalist and Lifetime Achievement awards will also be conferred.

In September, MMC had revealed that they received 31 nominations in nine categories for the awards during the duration window.

The most nominations had been submitted for social and politics categories, the council revealed.

While six nominations had been submitted for each of the two categories, five submissions had been submitted for business category, four in feature category, two in sports category, two in video journalism, two in legal category, one for the most promising journalist award and three are up for the award under photo journalism category.
