An amendment to nullify the age restriction for presidential candidates has been submitted to parliament.
It was submitted to parliament on Monday, by the deputy parliamentary group leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), MP Ibrahim Falaah.
Noting that foreign countries do not have any such restrictions for presidential candidates, Falaah previously said that he believes Maldives should practice this as well.
The amendment to the Constitution, changing the age requirement of presidential and vice-presidential candidates to between 30 to 65, was passed in 2015. It was backed by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhooree Party as well.
