The Elections Commission has decided to add two seats to Male’ constituencies in Parliament.

EC announced this decision via twitter on Monday, after deliberations at a commission meeting.

The commission announced that they will not be adding extra seats to any other constituency except for the two seats in Henveiru and Mahchangoalhi wards of capital city Male’.

EC’s announcement comes at a time Addu City’s council has requested to establish two new seats prior to next year's parliamentary elections.

According to the commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram, the decision to create two more seats comes following the increase in population in these areas.

Akram said that the two new constituencies will be mid-Mahchangoalhi and west-Henveiru. With the creation of the new constituency in Henveiru, Akram said that this will now make Hulhumale' a different constituency.
