‘Nasheed’s return brought tears to my eyes’: Jared Genser
Genser said he also looks forward to visiting the country soon
Ben Emmerson congratulated the Maldivian people for ‘the restoration of constitutional democracy’

International human rights lawyer Jared Genser has said that seeing former President Mohamed Nasheed’s return to Maldives has brought tears to his eyes.

Genser, who had worked to free Nasheed after his arrest on terrorism charges, said this in a tweet after thousands of supporters gathered at the capital city to welcome the exiled leader upon his return on Thursday.

In the tweet, Genser, noting that he personally was labelled as an “enemy of the state” by President Abdulla Yameen, said he also looks forward to visiting the country soon.

“I could not be more thrilled for the people of the Maldives.”

Also on Twitter, International lawyer and former UN special rapporteur Ben Emmerson congratulated the Maldivian people for ‘the restoration of constitutional democracy.’

“Now the hard work begins, to unravel the mess left behind by Yameen and his cronies and to hold those responsible for wrongdoing accountable in a court of law.”
